you booked a newborn session! here's what to expect:

Lifestyle newborn portraiture is focused on capturing connection and genuine emotion rather than on utilizing props and photoshop for a constructed scene. Newborn sessions take place in the family's home or at my shared studio in Spring, TX.

We will employ baby-led posing to capture your little one(s) in natural positions and typically with other family members in the frame. I'll get plenty of detail shots as well as wider images of family members in their element -- cozy on a couch or piled in bed, rocking baby, big brother/sister showing off their toys, etc.

For studio sessions, you will have almost a dozen set options to choose from. Together, we will plan 1-3 sets to photograph (depending on your session time). Because studio sessions have a structured beginning and ending time, I recommend ensuring baby has a full tummy before our session time starts. A quick bottle or breastfeed right before leaving your home or even in the car upon arrival is a good idea. There is a changing room on site with a diapering station if you want to wait until the last minute to put baby in his/her outfit!

For in-home sessions, I always promise to make your house look cleaner than it is. All I ask is that you tidy the 2-3 areas in your home where we will be most likely to photograph. Because in-home sessions are typically longer than studio sessions, you will have time for a last-minute change or feed once I arrive (I will need ~10 minutes to analyze the environment and set up any needed lights. If you have pets, please put them in a separate room or a kennel as photography lighting & equipment is not the most agreeable with pets!

three reminders for a successful session

  1. Wardrobe planning - Mama, plan your outfit first! Next, plan 2-3 outfits for baby in case of a blowout. Bring 2 swaddle blankets that match everyone’s outfits. Remember to avoid small patterns.
  2. Snacks - Everybody needs a snack before the session begins. Trust me. Breastfeeding mamas? This includes you. Husband & siblings? Yep, feed 'em. If your session is at the studio, I recommend arriving a few minutes before your session time and feeding baby a last-minute snack in the car. For in-home sessions, you can wait until I arrive to feed baby that last-minute snack as I'll need a few minutes to assess lighting needs.
  3. Dress baby last - For both studio and in-home sessions, plan to dress baby last. Car seats are magnets for blowouts in my experience. There is a changing table available in the studio restroom.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to read the portrait session prep guide before your session and browse through the color palette inspo in this blog if you need some wardrobe ideas.
