Your personal branding session is on the calendar, and now it’s time to talk props. Every personal branding session is different (it is personal, after all!), but there are a few tried-and-true props that I recommend to every one of my clients. Props help us infuse personality into your gallery; if this list sparks an idea for something that is just you, don't be afraid to throw it in your bag! We can never have too many props.
1. Coffee / tea
What's your morning beverage of choice? Are you a coffee snob with a favorite roast? Bring a bag of your favorite beans along with your coffee cup. Mornings on the go? Grab your travel mug. The point is for us to curate an image that looks like a normal morning for you. For example, a personal coach or fitness instructor might want to bring pre-workout and a shaker cup! (Bonus points if you have a branded mug.)
2. PHONE
Welcome to the 21st century... we carry a computer in our pocket. We'll want a few images of you with your phone to illustrate calling or video chatting with a client, connecting with your audience on Instagram, or texting with a vendor. For better or worse, your phone is a big part of your business, so it deserves some time in the spotlight, too.
3. COMPUTER/LAPTOP/IPAD
This is where the work gets done. Most clients bring a laptop or iPad but if you have a serious setup in your office (where my dual monitor geeks at?!) let me know and we can talk about making a stop there or finding another creative way to incorporate a "getting work done" shot.
4. Tools of the trade
This is probably the MOST important thing I want you to bring. What are the tools that are unique to your sector? Here are some examples to get you thinking in the right direction:
- Fitness instructor - weights or workout bands
- Chiropractor or physical therapist - anatomy models, activator, TENS unit
- Florist - shears, floral tape, vases, flowers (obvs!)
- Party planner - balloons, party supplies, cake toppers
- Accountant - calculator, blue light glasses
- Hair stylist - hairbrushes, blow dryer, scissors
- Baker / cookie artist - finished goods as well as supplies, mixing bowl, frosting
5. FAVORITE SNACK, drink, or adult bev
What's your go-to snack (good or guilty please)? Whether it’s a post-workout protein bar, lemon cupcake, or giant bowl of popcorn, bring it! I love to kick back on the patio with a glass of wine and some friends on a nice evening. This prop will help us show a "laid back" feel to a few images. Not your thing? No problem. If you're more often seen holding a Dr. Pepper or crunching on that gooooood Sonic ice, bring this instead!
6. BOOK/MAGAZINE/PLANNER
Time to bust out your planner if you’re a pen-to-paper kind of gal. Or throw in your favorite book or magazine to get some candid shots that show how you pass the time.
7. SUNGLASSES
Sunglasses are a life-saver when it comes to the question, What do I do with my hands? Plus, they help us shoot in just about any lighting situation, and they’re just cute.
8. HAT
Another helpful prop when you need something to do with your hands. Or keep the sun off your face. Or finish an outfit. Or look trendy or sporty. A hat is always a good bet.
9. PURSE/BACKPACK
You only have two hands... where do you put your stuff? If you have a couple of go-to bags, bring both of them (for example, your laptop bag/backpack and that Lulu belt bag you wear all weekend long). Bonus points if you coordinate different bags for different outfits.
10. OTHER PEOPLE
I love love love incorporating other people into your photoshoot. Having a few friends can help us illustrate. For example, interacting with a client, providing a service, or working out with a friend.
11. Favorite Passtime
People like to see the people behind a business. If you're not opposed to the idea, I like to take a few shots that illustrate who you are after hours. Do you love camping? Bring your hiking boots. Gaming? Bring a controller. Dancing? Bring your tap shoes.
12. Celebratory props
What's the next milestone coming up for your business? Bring some balloons, a bottle of champagne, streamers, or a party hat! If you'd like to celebrate a major milestone (like 5 years in business), consider renting marquee numbers. I love working with Craft The Moment Party Co for specialty rentals. Mention you're a Simple Vintage client and she'll give you the hookup!
