Wondering what to wear for your brand photoshoot?

If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet before a photoshoot -- or even a regular Tuesday -- thinking, “I have nothing to wear,” you’re not alone. Whether you’re prepping for updated headshots or a full brand session, choosing your wardrobe can feel overwhelming — especially when you want your photos to look cohesive, confident, and unmistakably you.

Good news? You don’t need a new wardrobe. You just need a plan.

Should I wear something formal or casual?

Bring a few "levels" of clothing. I typically tell my clients to bring a few in each category: inspirational, everyday professional, and casual. Your "inspirational" outfit should represent the level of business you’re stepping into — not just where you are right now.

  • If you typically work from home in casual pieces, elevate your look with a blazer, structured top, or tailored pants.
  • If your daily style is already polished, bring in elements that make you feel powerful — a statement color, heels, or accessories that reflect your personality.

The goal isn’t to look “dressed up.” It’s to look aligned with the version of yourself your ideal clients already trust to deliver results.

Your clothes can say a lot

Your clothing tells your story before you say a word. Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to look approachable or authoritative?
  • Does my brand lean classic, creative, or bold?
  • What energy do I want my photos to give off?

A soft blouse and neutral palette can communicate calm professionalism. A structured jacket in a rich jewel tone might feel confident and magnetic. The key is intentionality — wear what reinforces your brand message.

Color: The secret ingredient

Color affects how your audience feels when they see your photos — and how confident you feel in them.

  • YES: Neutrals (cream, taupe, gray, navy, brown, black) are versatile and timeless.
  • MAYBE: Bold colors (emerald, cobalt, deep red) can make your brand images pop — especially when they match your brand palette.
  • SKIP: Neon or overly bright tones can reflect color onto your skin and distract from your face.

Pro tip: If you’re unsure which colors best suit you, work with a style and color expert like Blair Petroni of Maeve Melange, a certified style and color consultant (and Houston Kibbe specialist!) and based in Spring, TX. Blair helps entrepreneurs identify their most flattering color palettes and silhouettes so their wardrobe feels like an effortless extension of their brand identity.

Prep like a pro

A few small tweaks can make a big difference:

  • Hair: Schedule cuts or color about a week before your session — not the day before.
  • Makeup: Think “your everyday look plus one level up.”
  • Glasses: Clean them beforehand, and if you’re updating frames soon, plan your shoot after they arrive.
  • Mindset: Treat your session like a celebration of your business. You’ve worked hard to build your brand — your photos should feel like a reflection of that success.

When I photographed Blair Petroni, a Houston-area style and color consultant, her wardrobe was a masterclass in brand alignment. Every piece she wore reflected her personality — bold, confident, a little BFF-style assertive — and her presence on camera perfectly matched the energy she brings to her IG stories and client sessions.

Her session is the perfect example of how curating your wardrobe with intention can make your brand photos feel cohesive and magnetic. Blair didn’t just look amazing — she looked exactly like her brand.
